Mise en Scene

Setting and Location:
Throughout the opening credits to 'Pretty Little Liars' setting is not particularly shown. The opening credits mainly focus on the four girls, using extreme close up and medium shots throughout.
Decor:
The background is dark and dull, which helps to place emphasis on the four girls within the opening credits. The lighting used is also low and dim, which could be suggesting mischievous events are too come. This could also be creating an eerie atmosphere, and make the audience wonder as to what is too come or what they are hiding. The use of the dark background and dim lighting could be helping to emphasise that they are preparing someone for their death, which is shown at the beginning of the credits.

                                                                  Body Language:

The body language shown within the opening credits portrays the four girls as uncomfortable. When the casket is closed, the girls appear anxious and nervous, as though they have got something to hide. The girls also do not directly look into the camera, which again highlights that they are not telling the whole truth about the situation and are uncomfortable. At one point within the opening credits, the character 'Aria' briefly looks directly into the camera, and places her finger to her lips to express secrecy. This is the only time that the characters interact with the audience.
Props and Objects:
Although there are no props shown to be specifically used by the four girls, props and other objects are still used within the opening credits. The makeup brush, nail varnish, curling tongs and shoes all help the audience to see that the girls, or possibly other people, are preparing somebody for their death. The audience know this as what is assumed as a female is shown being placed in a casket and the lid closing, which informs us that she may is dead.
